Emilia Martín Fierro

ARTIST BIO

Emilia Martín Fierro was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, in 1965. She is a visual artist and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of La Laguna. She studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp and at the University of La Laguna, where she earned her doctorate in 2003. Her multidisciplinary practice brings together painting, installation, photography, textile art, and archival inquiry. Her work has been presented in Spain and the United States.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Emilia Martín Fierro's practice explores the relationships between image, archive, material, and memory. Through layers of painting and photography applied to superimposed fabrics and organza, she works with transparency, folds, reflections, and light to create images that remain active yet incomplete.

Her work does not attempt to reconstruct or complete what is absent from the archive. Instead, it acknowledges the fragility of memory and the effort required to sustain it without reducing its complexity. Moving between the intimate and the historical, the body and the territory, her practice considers every act of seeing as partial. Veiling becomes a form of attention and care, while shoring up becomes a discreet act of resistance.
